Two from Kearny High School at Girl’s Career Institute

Girls’ Career Institute (GCI), formerly called Girls Citizenship Institute, is an annual program held at Douglass College which was founded by the clubwomen of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs (NJSFWC). This year, the delegates sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Arlington are Emily Horvaht and Maci Covello.

Horvaht is a member of the National Honor society and the Latin National Honor Society. She volunteers by tutoring, assisting with fund raisers and coaching the Kearny Kickers team. She is interested in the medical field and found the course in respiratory therapy of great interest.

Covello is captain of the basketball team, won three varsity letters as a freshman, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She participates in food and clothing drives, coaches’ soccer and focuses on developing youth athletics. Teaching is her goal, and she hopes to become an elementary school teacher and soccer coach.

The Girls’ Career Institute (GCI) allows high school junior girls to participate in the annual four-day “mini college experience” at Douglass College on the campus of the University of Rutgers in New Brunswick. During this year’s event, from June 6 to June 9, the delegates experienced a sample of college life by living in a dorm, eating in a cafeteria, attending lectures and workshops. The young women learn about career choices from women working in a variety of professions, trades and academic disciplines. The GCI delegates also can network with other delegates from across New Jersey.
