JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A lawsuit filed Thursday challenges a state election agency’s decision that said the fifth-place finisher in a special primary for Alaska’s U.S. House seat could not replace a candidate who abruptly dropped out.

The lawsuit says the Division of Elections misinterpreted state law. It says the fifth-place finisher, Republican Tara Sweeney, should be put on the August special election ballot in place of independent Al Gross, who withdrew.

Daniels, 6-foot-8, 199 pounds, is a 19-year-old Australian who played in the G League last season. He averaged 12.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 26 games. The Court of Arbitration for Sport says the ski federations of Austria, Germany, Croatia and Switzerland have appealed the re-election of Johan Eliasch as president of the International Ski Federation because they say the election was faulty. Eliasch was re-elected to lead skiing and snowboarding through the 2026 Olympics at the FIS Congress in late May.  He was unopposed on the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) ballot but some in the room and online for the election meeting in Milan challenged the voting rules and a few delegates walked out. The billionaire owner of sportswear brand Head was first elected last year in a contest.

Toyota is recalling 2,700 of its bZ4X crossover vehicles globally for wheel bolts that could become loose, in a major setback for the Japanese automaker’s ambitions to roll out electric cars. Toyota says the cause is still under investigation, but the whole wheel could come off, risking a crash. The vehicles subject to the recall include about 2,200 destined for Europe, 270 for North America, 112 for Japan, and 60 for the rest of Asia. They were produced between March and June. The bZ4X is a key model in Toyota’s plans to strengthen its electric lineup.

India has sent a technical team to Kabul to coordinate the delivery of humanitarian assistance after a destructive earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. India’s External Affairs Ministry said the team has been deployed to its embassy in the Afghan capital. The embassy has been vacant since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August. A ministry statement Thursday didn’t give details about the technical team or any relief material sent to Afghanistan. Since the Taliban took power, India has sent tons of wheat, COVID-19 vaccines and other medicine, and winter clothing to Afghanistan to help with shortages.

The three-best players in the 2022 NBA draft have found their new homes.

State regulators have approved a gambling license for the first newly constructed casino in the Reno-Sparks area in 25 years. The Nevada Gaming Commission voted Thursday to approve the license sought by Las Vegas-based Olympia Gaming for the Legends Bay Casino. The $120 million, 80,000-square-foot casino is scheduled to open before the end of the summer at the Legends at Sparks Marina shopping mall along I-80 just east of Reno. It will include a sportsbook operated by Circa Sports, table games, slot machines, video poker and multiple restaurants. Company officials say the sportsbook will be the largest in northern Nevada.

Olivier Nadeau broke a third-period tie with Shawinigan’s third power-play goal, Antoine Coulombe made 38 saves and the Cataractes beat the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2 on Wednesday night in the Memorial Cup. Xavier Bourgault and Mavrik Bourque also scored and assisted on Nadeau’s winner to help Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Shawinigan improve to 2-0 with a game left in round-robin play. Nadeau gave Shawinigan the lead at 7:06 of the third, tipping Bourque’s pass from left side past goalie Marco  Costantini from the deep slot. Mason McTavish and Avery Hayes scored for Ontario Hockey League champion Hamilton. The Bulldogs are 0-2.

A library board on Long Island reversed a decision made earlier this week to remove Pride Month displays from the system’s children’s sections shortly after Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered a state human rights investigation. The Smithtown Library board of trustees had been under fire since voting Tuesday to remove the displays, which included picture books like “Pink is for Boys” and “Pride Puppy.” The board voted 4-2 at an emergency meeting Thursday night to rescind the removal order for children’s sections. Hochul earlier Thursday directed the state Division of Human Rights to launch an immediate investigation into the initial action.

ORLANDO, Fla. — I’m not only jumping on the Paolo Banchero bandwagon.

The Portland Trail Blazers have selected Shaedon Sharpe with the seventh pick in the NBA draft. The 6-foot-6 Sharpe was a five-star recruit who committed to Kentucky but never played for the Wildcats. The Canadian intended on redshirting his first season, but instead decided to declare for the draft. The Blazers finished 27-55 last season and are rebuilding around All-Star Damian Lillard. Portland made a deal with Detroit a day before the draft to acquire Jerami Grant.

The San Antonio Spurs chose Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan with the No. 9 selection in the NBA Draft. A 6-foot-9 forward, Sochan averaged 9.2 points and 6.4 rebounds in his lone season with the Bears. San Antonio missed the postseason the past two seasons following a league record 22 straight playoff appearances. The Spurs are attempting to reinvigorate their franchise behind All-Star Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Josh Primo and now Sochan.

South American soccer body CONMEBOL has moved this year’s Copa Sudamericana final from the Brazilian capital city of Brasilia to Cordoba, Argentina. CONMEBOL said in a statement the change was requested by Brazil’s soccer confederation due to the country’s first round of the general elections scheduled for Oct. 2, a day after the final of the club tournament. This year’s final will be hosted at the Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium. The same venue hosted the final of the tournament in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented fans from watching an all-Argentine final between winners Defensa y Justicia and Lanus.

The Detroit Pistons have selected Purdue's Jaden Ivey with the No. 5 overall pick in the NBA draft. Detroit’s rebuilding plan should get a boost with the addition of the dynamic player. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Ivey can play point or shooting guard. He averaged 17.3 points last season and made 46% of his shots overall and 36% beyond the 3-point arc. Detroit desperately needs Ivey to pan out after winning just 23 games last year, finishing ahead of only Houston and Orlando in the NBA.

The Houston Rockets selected Auburn freshman Jabari Smith Jr. with the third overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday night, adding a skilled player to join last year’s second pick Jalen Green as the team continues its rebuild. Smith comes to Houston after the power forward averaged 16.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and two assists per game to win SEC freshman of the year, All-SEC first-team and second-team All-America honors. A former chief of staff to Delaware State Auditor Kathy McGuiness has admitted at her criminal corruption trial that he lied under oath to a grand jury that was investigating McGuiness. Thomas Van Horn acknowledged under cross-examination by the defense Thursday that he told the grand jury last year that McGuiness fired him because of “disagreements” they had. In fact, McGuiness asked Van Horn to resign because he had been in a relationship with a subordinate staffer. A Democrat elected in 2018, McGuiness is responsible as state auditor for rooting out government fraud, waste and abuse. She is being tried on felony counts of theft and witness intimidation, and other misdemeanor charges.

Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, has been charged with driving under the influence by prosecutors in Northern California. Prosecutors say Paul Pelosi was arrested following the May 28 crash in Napa County after a test showed the 82-year-old had a blood alcohol content level of .082%. They say the blood sample was taken about two hours after the collision. The California Highway Patrol says a Jeep hit Paul Pelosi's Porsche as he was driving it into an intersection in Yountville. The driver of the Jeep was not arrested. Paul Pelosi was released on $5,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 3. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

It was the bang of roadside construction equipment along I-595 that did it. Suddenly, Nichole Notte wasn’t behind the wheel of her Jeep, she was back on the pile at Surfside with her search and rescue dog, Dig.

The Orlando Magic selected Duke freshman Paolo Banchero with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. After leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final season, the 6-foot-10 forward was called first by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to begin the draft, beating out fellow first-year forwards Jabari Smith Jr. and Chet Holmgren. Banchero, wearing a purple suit full of bling, received a loud ovation inside Barclays Center, where Duke lost in the ACC Tournament final.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey’s plan to create a new state agency to boost the desert state’s increasingly strained water supply has morphed into a plan to give an existing state entity the right to dole out a new $1 billion appropriation. The entity is an obscure agency called the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority. It will become a standalone agency with oversight from a new board and some from the Legislature. The final plan was working its way through the House and Senate on Thursday as the Legislature moves to enact its final pieces of legislation of the year.

A Brazilian federal judge has released a former education minister of President Jair Bolsonaro a day after he was arrested by federal police in a graft investigation. Judge Ney Bello said Thursday that Milton Ribeiro and four other suspects should be freed because they are not part of the current administration and the accusations do not justify his detention before a trial. Brazilian media showed Ribeiro leaving a prison in the city of Sao Paulo hours after Bello’s decision. His arrest was another blow to Bolsonaro’s bid for reelection in October, with opinion polls showing the far-right president trailing leftist former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

NEW YORK — Just like the New York Daily News reported back on May 25, the Nets have been playing with fire. And now, almost a month later, they’re about to get burned.

The Oklahoma City Thunder chose Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft. Holmgren, a versatile 7-footer from Minneapolis, was a second-team Associated Press All-American in his only season with Gonzaga. He averaged 14.1 points and 9.9 rebounds and ranked second nationally with 3.7 blocks per game. He shot 61% from 3-point range and 39% from 3-point range last season. His skill could help him be effective as he works to add to his slender 195-pound frame.

Jay Haas has been shooting his age or better for the last three years. He's just never done on it on a stage quite like the U.S. Senior Open. The 68-year-old Haas did one better. He opened with a 67 at Saucon Valley and shared the 18-hole lead with Mark Hensby. It's the seventh time Haas has shot his age or better. And he becomes the fifth player in U.S. Senior Open history to shoot his age. Haas and Hensby have a one-shot lead over a group of four players that include Steve Stricker and Rocco Mediate.

Tennessee tight end Chig Okonkwo has a really good reason not to be working with the rest of the Titans’ rookies as they wrap up their offseason at the team headquarters. Okonkwo had somewhere better to be. It's called Tight End University. Okonkwo said Thursday it's just so amazing to be able to learn from so many Pro Bowl tight ends. Tight End U is back for a second straight year in Music City. That's the offseason home of San Francisco tight end George Kittle who first devised this three-day camp with Travis Kelce of the Chiefs and Greg Olsen.

A heat wave that's already lasted more than a week keeps on baking the US, Asia and even the Arctic. At least eight US states Thursday hit 100 degrees, that's after 12 did that on Wednesday. Records keep falling. A city in the Russian Arctic hit nearly 90 degrees. This early summer heat wave looks and feels more like August. Scientists say it has all the hallmarks of climate change. In Macon, Georgia, the temperature ramped from 64 to 105 degrees on Wednesday and then hit 104, a further record, on Thursday.

LOS ANGELES — Nowhere in the lone sentence that comprises Title IX, the 1972 law that forbids discrimination, denial of benefits or exclusion on the basis of sex in any education program or activity that receives federal financial assistance, does the word "sports" appear.

California’s governor and top law enforcement official say they're working with legislative leaders to keep dangerous people from carrying concealed weapons in public. They plan legislation next week after a U.S. Supreme Court decision Thursday invalidated a key part of the state’s current law. Attorney General Rob Bonta says the high court’s ruling still leaves states with the right to limit concealed carry permits to those who may safely possess firearms. Sam Paredes, executive director of Gun Owners of California, says he expects a flood of gun owners to apply for concealed carry permits. He says they will dare authorities to go against the Supreme Court's decision.
